Heartwarming Video of First PGT-P Baby With Parents
"Nobody can really argue with a healthy, happy baby"
The following video is from the National Geographic film Bebé On Demand. It features the first PGT-P baby Aurea Smigrodzki and her parents, Rafal and Thuy. Rafal describes how he learned about Genomic Prediction, a company offering PGT-P (preimplantation genetic testing for polygenic disorders), and explains his decision to use this new technology to have Aurea despite resistance.
Unlike much of the media about this technology, this is an incredibly sympathetic portrayal. There is no ominous music, personal attacks, implied associations with crimes of the past, or scientifically illiterate commentary. Videos like this can probably do more good than any blog post I’ll make about the ethics of PGT-P. It seems worthwhile to share it with you all. Unfortunately, this clip only has 88 views at the time of writing, and I suspect a good portion of those are mine. It warms my heart so much that I’ve watched it many times. I hope you enjoy it at least as much as I have, and please consider sharing with others.
I think the sad thing about this tech is that media framing it in a positive light gets relatively zero attention in comparison to media that frames it as controversial, evil, creepy, elitist, what have you, which inspires PLENTY of attention. For better or for worse, controversy sells in today's markets.
Is it really the first one? Or just the first one that is being promoted?
